After attending a professional curtain-making course in 2017, Rebecca Tye decided to turn a hobby and the skills she’d learned on the course into a business.
Once both her children went to school, it meant she could work from home but also visits clients for consultations and take measurements, and still be available for school pick-up time, school functions and help Shrivenham Primary School Parent Teacher Association.
Rebecca started Rebecca Tye Soft Furnishings in 2018 and now makes made-to-measure soft furnishings including curtains, cushions and Roman blinds. She uses high-quality linings and interlinings to ensure her customers get a professional and quality finish. She has also made bespoke pieces for homes, such as pelmets over curtains, bench cushions and even a ‘fire seat for a fire surround’.
Rebecca has lived in Shrivenham for 10 years and says most of her customers are from Shrivenham, Watchfield, Faringdon and the surrounding villages, although Rebecca Tye Soft Furnishings can cover further afield around Oxfordshire and Wiltshire.
“When a potential client gets in touch, I usually visit their home to talk about what they would like, also to understand the look they are hoping for and to take measurements,” explained Rebecca. “I have a selection of fabric books that I take along with me, so clients can choose a fabric to suit their scheme.”
Rebecca has a few suppliers that she regularly works with who supply all the materials she uses including lining fabric, blackout lining, Roman blind headrails, accessories, curtain tracks and poles.
Working closely with clients means they get a personal service, a bespoke hand-made product that fits beautifully in their home and is unique to them.
One highlight that Rebecca is particularly proud of is having made the curtains for the commemorative plaque that was unveiled a couple of years ago by Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh at the Defence Academy Chaplain’s Museum in Watchfield.
